The Current

Buzzing with energy and momentum, The Current is a regional destination and a neighborhood nexus, ripe with opportunity. Stunning new residences and elevated office space are surrounded by the perfect combination of retail, restaurants, culture, and recreation. Redefining what it means to be a mixed-use community in Richmond, the new development is defined by a branding and marketing package that goes beyond the bounds of tradition to have a profound and positive impact on the quality of life and economic opportunity in Manchester.

Electric Connections

Comprised of residential, office, and retail, this mixed-use, full block development is a catalyst for the transforming Manchester neighborhood of Richmond, Virginia. The Current is named for Manchester’s proximity to the James River rapids, with a nod to its future as a transportation hub along I-95 while also calling attention to the 75+ electric car charging stations housed in its public garage.

Energy Hub

Design inspiration channels the modern development’s vibrant concept of 24/7 living, suited for the emerging neighborhood while contrasting with a subdued palette representative of the nearby river. The logo and iconography harmoniously connect in the form of a battery – an elegant yet electric interpretation of the energy that powers the neighborhood.

The Current delivers a small-scale urban environment that doesn’t exist elsewhere in Richmond by creating an urban condition where one didn’t exist before. This presented a unique architectural opportunity to set the tone for Manchester’s urban streetscape and a new community destination. Breaking down the massing and addressing facade materiality in relation to its immediate neighbors helped the development both blend with and strengthen the existing urban experience.

The entire design centers around activating the 4th Street corridor—including the interiors. Amenities are placed to contribute to this activity, drawing people in with an open, hospitality vibe. Leasing, coworking, mailroom, and entertainment spaces feature an urban sophisticate point of view with bold art incorporating The Current’s electric brand story. Floor-to-ceiling windows, an elevated infinity pool, and landscaping connect public and private spaces for an experience that serves both residents and visitors.

Securing retail space on either side of the central courtyard, Hatch Local Food Hall brought Richmond’s first food hall to The Current in the winter of 2022, combining eight creative, local restaurant concepts under one roof. The ultimate amenity, Hatch invites residents, office tenants, and the public to experience Manchester’s momentum.
