Hickok Cole Architects designed a new built-to-suit, Class A office building for the headquarters of the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) at 1616 Rhode Island Avenue, NW. CSIS is a nonprofit, international policy institution based in Washington, DC. The 130,000 SF, 9-story new building features a multi-story entry lobby connecting three levels of world-class conferencing facilities. The upper floors, which are dedicated to CSIS scholars and staff, are organized around a central informal meeting place called “The Commons.” The façade along Rhode Island Avenue is composed of a strong stone frame surrounding an elegant glass skin, which opens toward Scott Circle. The permanence and tradition of stone are appropriate for a main avenue in Washington, DC and for a major institution while the frame is a dynamic and memorable form that symbolizes the international presence of CSIS.
