The future of our firm belongs to those who step up to lead it. In the past five years, these leaders and dreamers have driven change in the way we work, the services we provide, the geographies we serve, and the way we stand up for what matters. They’ve led us to grow — to be better, not just bigger. And transformed our pursuit of what’s next from a tagline to a way of life.
For more than 30 years, we’ve built our success on The Three Gs of Great Design, Great Management, and Great Place to Work. These principles guide how we run our firm, measure success, and set goals for the future. Learn more about our work, our firm, and the people behind it all.
“Being selected for an iLab has allowed me to explore creative ways to address the myriad of employee health needs at work. My research is sparking conversations with clients about how to better support nursing mothers in the workplace, and I can’t wait to see where it takes us.”
“Working on building repositioning projects fascinates me—the process of peeling back the onion on an existing building to figure out how it can be salvaged and modified effectively. I love the challenge of taking something old and making it new again.”
“The interdisciplinary design collaboration and ideation are my favorite. Architects connect ideas between clients, users, public and private organizations, and many others in developing our designs. It’s an incredible opportunity and responsibility to serve our community and environment in this way.”
Great work takes great teams — and people with the focus, vision, and energy to keep us moving forward. That’s why we’re invested in providing a healthy work environment with the tools to support creative work and a balanced life, with competitive salaries and benefits to match.

Staying ahead of the curve requires both curiosity and passion for design. We work hard to fuel these fires with a variety of outlets for designers to flex their creative muscles in pursuit of what’s next.
A biannual internal micro-grant program providing billable hours to pursue passion projects that inform our work.
Team-led investigations into emerging design challenges and methodologies through external competitions.
Diverse teams of internal experts tasked with exploring prototypes for new market opportunities.
Formalized research efforts conducted alongside industry partners in support of public and privately-funded initiatives.
It’s our responsibility to be active proponents for greater diversity in our profession and our firm. We seek to actively recruit, retain, and promote underrepresented genders, races, and ethnicities into roles where they feel empowered for career advancement and professional impact. We also understand the difference between words and actions and are committed to achieving these goals in a measurable and transparent way. We want our team to know where we stand, and what we stand for — and to represent the future and potential of our industry within our own walls.
We completed and submitted our application for an ILFI Just label in December 2021.
We’re passionate about giving back to our local community and causes near and dear to our hearts. We do this in a number of ways: corporate-sponsored annual events like Art Night, pro-bono design opportunities organized by our Full Circle committee, and 24 paid volunteer hours for all team members. Together, our efforts seek to support organizations that share our values and directly serve the communities where we live and work.
“It means so much to know the work we do positively affects the lives of those who interact with our projects. Hearing others speak so highly of the environments we created—whether it’s their office, favorite restaurant, or new home—their joy is the most fulfilling aspect of being a designer.”
“I love that I get to live in the city where I do my work. I get to see our buildings all around me and experience them as part of my everyday life as a DC resident.”
“I love working on our wood frame projects. Designing them is like a huge puzzle I can’t wait to solve. And because of their price point, they’re often part of launching a transitioning neighborhood into a new identity. It’s amazing to see buildings have that kind of impact.”
Working from home has its perks, but we believe there’s real value to be gained by being in the office with each other and our clients. Lucky for us (and you!), we have two brand new workspaces designed to entice you out of your home office and into an environment that reflects and supports everything we love most about design.
Our NoMa HQ transforms DC’s historic Press House building into a design studio unlike any in the city. Located steps from Union Market, the space features flexible workspaces, custom artwork, a private terrace, and jaw-dropping skylights, making this light-filled space a designer’s dream (just ask our team!).
Our Richmond office is housed in repurposed warehouse in the vibrant Scott’s Addition neighborhood. Here, our design studio provides the full spectrum of Hickok Cole services: architecture, interiors, and creative. The thoughtfully-designed space is includes collaboration areas, a wellness room, and dedicated meeting spaces to host our clients.
