Yolanda Cole, FAIA, receives AIA|DC’s Centennial Medal

We’re thrilled to announce that Yolanda Cole, Senior Principal and Co-Founder of Hickok Cole, has been awarded the prestigious Centennial Medal by AIA|DC. This award recognizes architects whose dedicated service has made a lasting impact on the chapter, community, and profession. Unlike typical design awards, the Centennial Medal honors those who’ve driven broader change in the industry.

With over 35 years’ experience in architecture and interior design, Yolanda is widely recognized for her focus on research and a collaborative practice. She’s held leadership roles, including AIA|DC Past President and Chair of ULI’s Washington District Council, and was previously named one of Washington’s “Power 100” and Washington Business Journal’s Women Who Mean Business.

Yolanda’s path to architecture was anything but traditional. Starting as a classically trained musician, she pivoted to architecture, leading major projects in Chicago, New York and Sydney, Australia before settling in DC. In 2003, she merged her firm with business partner Mike Hickok’s, creating the Hickok Cole we know today. Her mantra, “I am a maximizer. I live to take something good and turn it into something great,” continues to drive her work as she spearheads strategic initiatives, guides the next generation of innovation, and champions research that pushes the boundaries of design.
