The Public Servant

Innovation District Pump Station

This new single-story pump station houses the mechanical equipment needed to meet the sewer demands expected for the upcoming North Potomac Yard campus. Located along the northern edge of the development, the pumping station includes creative installations and exhibits that explore the building’s function and the neighborhood’s history.

The Innovation District Pump Station project features a 7,800-SF wastewater facility designed to serve both functional and public-facing roles. The structure doubles as a multipurpose shade pavilion and an experiential education center. The design harmonizes essential infrastructure with community amenities, enhancing the park’s overall utility and accessibility.

Integrated within a public park, the surrounding areas offer a variety of features that invite public use and enjoyment, including walking trails, a playground, and open green spaces. Its open-air design and thoughtful integration within the landscape makes it a welcoming environment for visitors of all ages.

At the heart of the pavilion is an interactive educational center focused on sustainable wastewater management. Through engaging displays, tactile models, and visualizations, visitors can explore how water is treated, reused, and conserved within the park’s ecosystem. By fostering public understanding and environmental stewardship, the pavilion elevates the park’s role as both an educational and communal resource.
