Designing a Ceiling Worth Looking Up For

Mark Ramirez, AIA, Managing Director and Senior Principal, shares how the iconic Oculus evolved from concept to construction as a centerpiece of the National Geographic Museum of Exploration’s lobby.

Nearly 10 years ago, we gathered around a whiteboard, sketched the first diagrams, and allowed ourselves to believe that one day we might walk through a building that would eventually be called the National Geographic Museum of Exploration. A decade later, after countless design meetings, technical milestones, and more than a few bumps in the road, that idea has become a real place, one filled with images, stories, science, and the unmistakable spirit of exploration.

At the heart of that experience is the main entry Pavilion and the grand ceiling. It is one of those architectural moments where design, technology, craft, and a client’s desire to express its mission all move together. Inspired by ocean waves, the ceiling’s form rises, folds, and gathers like water in motion. It does not simply cover the room; it gives the Pavilion its sense of movement. It reminds visitors that exploration is not static, but ongoing and without end. The form penetrates the glass façade, expressing itself in the eyebrow and blurring the line between inside and outside. It pulls you in, revealing more and more detail as you enter, just as National Geographic stories do.

The main design principle was deceptively simple: use natural forms, interpreted through leading-edge digital technology, to create a form that expressed the National Geographic Society’s mission while still being buildable and cost-effective. That last part matters. It is easy to draw something beautiful that cannot be made, or can only be made by ignoring budget, schedule, structure, acoustics, and maintenance. The real work was finding the balance where design aspiration and execution could meet.

This delicate balance was a process of exploration in its own right. The ceiling was developed through 3D modeling in Rhino, iterative studies, fabrication input, mock-ups, and an unprecedented willingness by the client and design team to explore options until the right solution was found. What should feel effortless to a visitor was anything but effortless to deliver. Every curve had to be translated into structure, every surface had to support acoustic performance, and every visible move had to be coordinated with the hidden systems that make the building work.

The design and construction partners were essential to making that possible. Radius Track helped deliver prefabricated support and structure for the curved forms, bringing rigor to geometry that could otherwise have remained an architectural fantasy. BASWA Phon provided the acoustical plaster system, allowing the ceiling to perform as beautifully as it looks. Mark Richey Woodworking brought craft and technology together in the steam-bent Oculus millwork, giving the center of the ceiling warmth, precision, and a hand-shaped sense of wonder.

None of this would have happened without National Geographic Society as a client. They understood that design was not decoration added at the end, but another form of exploration. When faced with a choice, they consistently pushed for the better idea: more open, more ambitious, more aligned with their mission, and more meaningful to the visitor. It is rare to find a client that gives the time and space needed to explore, test, adjust, and improve. National Geographic did; that trust changed the outcome.

The grand ceiling is significant not only because it is visually memorable, but because it embodies the museum’s larger purpose. It is natural form shaped by digital intelligence. It is craft strengthened by technology. It is ambition disciplined by budget and constructability. Most importantly, it is architecture placed in service of curiosity. Like the exhibitions beneath it, the ceiling asks visitors to look closer, to wonder how it was made, and to feel, for a moment, that they are standing inside a story still unfolding.

The museum is a beautiful box, yes, but its true power comes from the explorers, storytellers, scientists, designers, builders, and partners who fill it with meaning. The ceiling is one expression of that shared effort: a wave overhead, a technical achievement behind the surface, and a reminder that when the process itself is allowed to explore, design can do more than solve a problem; it can inspire.
