The Current wins AIA Richmond Merit Award
The Richmond, VA architecture community gathered at Arts & Letters on Thursday, October 19 to celebrate the city’s best ideas, projects, and design leaders. Emceed by AIA Richmond Immediate Past President–and Hickok Cole’s own–Taylor Clark, AIA, the awards ceremony honored the achievements of those guiding and growing the profession in the River City.
Hickok Cole RVA team members Jessica Zullo, John Lang, Kate Braswell, and Emily Rickman were in attendance and proud to accept an Award of Merit for The Current, a mixed-use development bringing new multifamily, office, and retail environments to the Manchester neighborhood. Jurors noted an appreciation for the design team’s care in controlling the building’s entrance level to reinforce movement to and through the facility with clear intent. “The building’s material palette is simple while using a variety of textures to project clear aspirations to a heightened level of design. Many best practices in multifamily design are present in this project without it feeling forced. We appreciated the perforated and gentle transition between private and public spaces.” They also cited the project’s successful approach to placemaking and the sense of community created through the design.
The Current delivers a small-scale urban environment that doesn’t exist elsewhere in Richmond by creating an urban condition where one didn’t exist before. It has also been recognized as GRACRE’s Best Mixed-Use project of 2023 and Richmond’s Commercial Development of the Year at the 2023 CoStar Impact Awards.
