Mike Johnson II elevated to IIDA Fellow

The International Interior Design Association (IIDA) just announced its new class of 2025 Fellows. We are proud to share that Mike Johnson II, FIIDA, AIA, NOMA, Associate Principal and Director of Interiors, has been granted admission to the distinguished group. As one of only five members this year, induction into the IIDA College of Fellows is the organization’s highest and most prestigious honor, awarded to members who have demonstrated exceptional leadership, outstanding professional accomplishments, and a profound impact on the interior design profession and industry.

With licensure as an interior designer and architect, Mike has dedicated over 23 years to advancing the profession, using design as a platform for storytelling, inclusivity, and positive change. His expertise spans award-winning projects prioritizing health, wellness, culture, equity, and innovation, demonstrating a deep commitment to creating meaningful and lasting impact.

“Being inducted into the IIDA College of Fellows is both a profound honor and a deeply personal milestone – this is a culmination of years spent elevating design, empowering others, and crafting spaces that leave a lasting impact,” said Mike regarding his accomplishment. “It is a heartfelt tribute to the people, moments, and mentors who have shaped my journey, and a continued commitment to inspiring the next generation of designers.”

Although Mike has been with Hickok Cole for just under three years, he’d proven himself early on as an incredibly valuable asset. His leadership within the IIDA Mid-Atlantic Chapter has been instrumental in shaping opportunities for designers at all levels. He served as Chapter President, VP of Professional Development, and DEI Advisor during the unprecedented times of COVID-19. Mike co-created the Propelling Leadership + Advocacy in Interior Design (PLAID) program, which has become a cornerstone for developing emerging design talent. Now in its sixth year, PLAID has empowered more than 70 young designers with leadership skills and a deeper understanding of the industry.

Currently serving his third term as Vice President on IIDA’s International Board of Directors, Mike has expanded his impact on a global scale. He has judged more than 20 IIDA chapter and international design awards, and has represented IIDA at speaking engagements across the United States and internationally.

“Mike’s elevation to the College of Fellows is a reflection of his outstanding work in design, his extraordinary dedication to uplifting others, and advancing our industry,” said Robert L. Holzbach, FAIA, Principal and Director of Commercial Office. “As a leader of our commercial interiors practice, Mike is a mentor, advocate, and global ambassador for design.  In addition to his design leadership, he consistently uses his voice to champion accessibility, equity, and opportunity within the profession. We are incredibly proud of his contributions and honored to celebrate this well-deserved recognition.”

As for the future of interior design, Mike’s vision is rooted in accessibility, opportunity, and advocacy. He believes in leveraging design as a tool for empowerment, ensuring that the profession remains welcoming, diverse, and adaptable.
