Targeting LEED Gold
The Reunion Square site is situated on nearly eight acres in the Anacostia area of Washington, DC. Intended to revitalize the neighborhood, the 1.5 million-SF development includes eight new mixed-use buildings. In the interest of improved circulation and more accommodating building typologies, the existing circulation framework has been improved for both pedestrians and automobiles.
Streetscape and landscaping improvements will contribute to the enhanced environment, crafting the lively sidewalk ethos for which many desirable Washington neighborhoods are known. At the intersection of Martin Luther King Jr Ave SE and “W” St, a plaza area will provide community meeting space as well as a more laudable location for the World’s Largest Chair. Local merchants’ wares and cafes will line both sides of W Street and continue around on MLK Ave. The buildings will be of varying heights across the site, taking cues from the residential neighborhood to the south, the street front of Martin Luther King Ave, and the historic Anacostia overlay district.
The 232,000-GSF office building is the first of three buildings designed by Hickok Cole. Slated to be the new home of the District’s Department of Health, the six-story building with penthouse will feature rooftop amenities and conferencing space, as well as amazing views of the Capital city. The building has been designed with high-end finishes of brick, architectural precast concrete, metal panels, and glass as well as materials and colors consistent with the historic brick architecture along Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue. The building is designed to achieve LEED Gold certification. In addition to the office building, Hickok Cole is designing a hotel and a mixed-use residential apartment building that will soon follow the construction of the office building.
