Bechtel Corporation is a 110-year-old family-owned engineering, construction, management, and development services company. Bechtel has a global reach of 140 countries and seven continents, and a portfolio of some of the largest infrastructure projects in the world. Bechtel’s Corporate and Government Groups relocated from their existing Frederick, MD office to Reston, VA, and the design team was asked to increase interaction among the employees while still maintaining the desired privacy in an open office environment.

In order to accomplish this, common spaces such as pantries, conference rooms and team rooms were clustered and centralized around the core. These spaces were easily accessible and centralized to draw people from all areas of the floor along main circulation routes. The designers alternated glass-fronted private offices along the perimeter with areas of workstations, maximizing natural light to the interior of the floor and views to the outside.

The result is a branded environment composed of steel and glass — an open office that fosters a culture of transparency. Large-scale brand gestures throughout the space communicate Bechtel’s global outreach and impact. The design team created a branded environment, reflective of a refined industrial character using raw steel, wood and glass. These are the building materials of Bechtel’s trade but of a scale that is commensurate with the interior environment. The designer’s integrated approach defines the way the client works, enhancing the company’s culture through an environment that fosters collaboration, provides a welcoming atmosphere, and establishes visual and physical connections among staff.
