455 Eye Street Apartments is a re-imagination of a historic block of Washington DC. Nestled between Prather’s Alley and Eye Street, the building interiors are a seamless blend of old and new.

An important part of the painstaking design process was the hand-painting of every brick in the lobby and lounges. The apartment building’s common space design intersperses hints of the authentic historic fabric, such as salvaged industrial equipment and iron rails, throughout the rooms. The wallcovering in the gym is an abstraction of a hand-drawn map from the 1800s that the design team found at the Library of Congress archives. The resident lounge, located in the blacksmith shop, the oldest part of the building, features rustic timber beams and exposed brick juxtaposed with tufted leather sofas, giving it a warm, soulful, yet luxurious atmosphere. Wherever possible, the unit design exposed the brick walls and concrete structure but contrasted those materials with sleek, white European cabinetry and historically-inspired glass pendants from an artisan lighting studio.
